Part-Time Swim Instructor

Job Description

The Town of Avon is currently accepting applications for the position of Swim Program Instructor.

The Swim Program Instructor is responsible for providing leadership, direction and hands-on development and implementation with the objective to yield the highest attainable levels of excellence in instruction as well as individual and team performance for the Community Swim Program, in the areas of Recreational Swimming and “Learn to Swim” programs. This position is responsible for assisting with developing and improving the technical and physical swimming skills of each participant, while providing a fun and enjoyable environment and orienting participants to the “Learn to Swim” progression and competitive swimming.

This position is required to work a flexible schedule, which includes weekends, nights, and holidays.



– Develops appropriate means necessary to offer quality swim lessons while remaining up-to-date on current trends
– Designs, organizes, and directs activities of participants in order to provide a high level of quality instruction for all participants
– Communicates and interacts effectively with class participants, parents/guardians, and the public, as appropriate, to ensure awareness of the program
– Teaches with encouragement and positive reinforcement and assists participants and parents/guardians in recognizing and understanding swimming developments and achievements
– Works with the Swim Program Supervisor on an on-going basis to upgrade, improve and refine individual teaching skills related to teaching effective swimming lessons to various age groups and skill levels
– Accurately tracks participant attendance, progress and payments; notifies parents of child’s progress and of payments due; and submits paperwork and records to the Swim – Program Supervisor
– Issues “Learn to Swim” certificates and updates files at front desk after each session
– Resolves simple public complaints in matters related to swimming instruction and refers other complaints to the Swim Program Supervisor
– Enforces pool safety standards and facility operational rules for all individuals and takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents
– Reports damage to equipment and/or injuries to participants by completing an Incident Report form when necessary and submitting it the Swim Program Supervisor
– Educates participants on safe habits and attitudes around aquatic areas and at the Avon Recreation Center
– Recognizes and responds effectively in emergencies in accordance with ARC’s emergency action plan


A minimum of 15 years of age and training in teaching “Learn to Swim” classes is required. A minimum of one-year experience in instructional swim is preferred or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence of required knowledge, skills and abilities.


Hiring range is $15.00 – $16.54 per hour, depending on qualifications. The total range for the position is $15.00 – $17.67. Individual recreation pass and retirement plan are included. Free Certification provided by Town of Avon Recreation Department.
